Nyota Uhura, communications officer of the USS Enterprise, is a woman with high responsibility on the starship. Polyglot (she speaks 37 languages) and talented, she joins Captain Pike's fleet to escape the pain of her parents' death.
Celia Rose Gooding is an American actress and singer. In 2017, then 17 years old, she got one of the main roles in the musical Jagged Little Pill, as Frankie. This role would earn her several accolades, including a Clives Barnes Award and 2020 Tony Award nomination, Best Supporting Actor in a Musical at the 2020 Antonyo Awards, and Best Musical Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards.
In 2022, she joined the main cast of the new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series as Nyota Uhura, helping to continue the legend of Nichelle Nichols, the first African-American actress in history to star in an American television series (Star Trek, 1966).
Celia is a strong advocate for the Black and lgbtqia+ communities. She has participated in the New York Times "Offstage" program on racial injustices, an ABC panel for Black History Month on the realities of being black on Broadway, and the Black Theatre Matters charity panel presented by Samantha Williams. She also supports interracial adoption, which allows children of one ethnicity to be adopted by parents of a different ethnicity, and participated in the Transformation 2020: Popular Democracy Defined panel to advocate for normalized consent and support for victims of sexual assault.
